Stop water damage before it happens

California is known World-wide as the State that has the best weather and most fun when it comes to snow and surf. Elk Grove is a brand new city right next to the capitol of California, Sacramento and is well known for nightlife, shopping, and being a mere short car drive from both San Francisco and South Lake Tahoe, as well as its wonderfully diverse homes that range from cute bungalows to multi-million dollar mansions. Most people move to California to get away from the hustle and bustle of life with its quieter neighborhoods and mild weather. Unfortunately even homeowners in Folsom are susceptible to the occasional common household Sacramento water damage.

El Dorado Hills in California, although known for its mild weather still gets both ends of the scale in terms of weather. It can be really hot in the Summer months, but also have quite a cold snap. Between April and October, Californias rainy season, there can be flooding and large amounts of water falling from the sky and traveling across land. However, it is not unusual for thunderstorms to occur even as late as September.

Flooding is the rising of a body of water and its overflowing onto normally dry land or structure (i.e. homes or businesses). Home flood damagecan occur both indoors and outdoors. Water damage resulting from flooding can take place regardless of the outside weather. The causes of indoor flooding are not limited to incessant rainfall or improper external drainage. It can be a result of faulty plumbing, defective appliances, and even household accidents. Any of these things can cause vast quantities of water to flow through a home and require the assistance of a water removal professional.

However, you as a homeowner can be proactive and perform preventive measures to limit your chances of flooding. Follow these easy tips to help prevent flood damage and the need for calling on a flood damage cleanup company.

1. Identify all mains in your home, water mains, electrical box and heating controls ensure your family knows where these controls are too. This is so you can turn them off immediately in emergency situations such as floods or heavy storms.

2. Inspect all household appliances that utilize water such as refrigerator icemakers, dishwashers, washing machines and toilets for signs of existing leaks or loose fittings.

3. Act early do not allow a small leak from growing, since this tends to happen exponentially.

4. Inspect your walls and ceiling regularly, checking on damp or soft spots. Soft or stained walls are usually signs of an internal leak either from a broken pipe or roof leak. Extract standing water as soon as you see it.

5. Never leave gloggs in your sinks or toilets, if the water continues to run it will overflow and flooding will result. Unless you have a garbage disposal unit, never through food or other solids down the sink. The same will go for toilet bowls never throw solid items into the toilet bowl.

6. Whenever you take a bath or shower either have the extractor fan turned on, open a window or both.

Regardless of how pro-active you are and carefully you check and double check your pipes you are still susceptible to water damage and that is what your home insurance is for. When you do experience water damage reaching out to your local water damage professionals is normally the most prudent step. They are needed when the scope of the water damage to your Folsom property is too much for you to handle on your own, and let’s face it, if you haven’t worked for a restoration company before knowing where to look and what to look for is not second nature.

Most times when you have water damage a professional should be called so he can evaluate the damage and at the very minimum tell you what needs to be dried. EXperienced technicians are trained track the water and evaluate the best way to dry out your home.

They will use their meters to ascertain the amount of water damage. Once the home or office building has been evaluated they will formulate a plan to rid the structure of the unwanted moisture. The plan usually starts will extracting all the standing water using a powerful extraction machine and the placing large powerful fans around the room with dehumidifiers to begin the drying process. An experienced technician should return daily to take readings and move equipment around as needed to ensure the home dries out as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately another hazard that can pose problems due to untimely or inefficient drying is the onset of mold. Mold, besides the musty smell, can cause serious health issues for people that are exposed to it. Experienced technician will be able to monitor the water job and prevent this from occurring. Homeowners and property management companies should be aware of the potentially lethal problems mold can cause if not taken care of quickly and safely.

Flood damage is a huge problem all over and not just in Sacramento and without exception should be handled by a professional to prevent any secondary damages. The restoration company that you hire should be trained and able to complete the job effectively to prevent future problems down the road.
